1. Debris

The guides that the shutters run through is susceptible to a build of debris such as stones, dirt and other pieces of litter, so every month, think about sweeping the guides with a stiff-bristled brush to remove anything that has gotten in there.

Check the head box for any leaves, twigs or dirt that may have become trapped and remove them as well. If you let dirt build up then the door may struggle to follow it’s guides and fail to close properly, creating a security breach that thieves could bypass.

2. Shutters

The shutters can be cleaned by simply hosing them down before sponging the exterior with mild soap in warm water. There is no need for abrasive cleaners or scrubbers as these can possibly damage the surfaces. Finish off with a dry microfibre cloth or old towel.

Don’t store anything underneath your shutters where they can become an obstruction. These can cause the shutters to gather on itself and limit movement and even cause the shutter slats to bend or damage. After harsh weather, always check that no debris has blown into a position where it may block the shutter.

4. Use Them

It is important that your roller shutters are used regularly to prevent any seizing up of the mechanisms: once a week should be enough to ensure that the systems remain fully operational.
