The Different Garage Door Types Available

Depending on your requirements there are now a selection of unique garage door designs to suit your needs. You may have heard the term ‘Up and Over’ when referring to the retractable garage door designs, but there are significant differences in the generic systems.

So what are the different door types?

Retractable Doors

For these systems a large proportion of the door swings outwards as it opens as it slides away into the ceiling of your garage. Because the pivot points are located at the top of the door, causing the door itself to swing outwards, you are unable to park too close to the garage door and still be able to open it.

Canopy Doors

In a similar vein to the retractable doors, canopy doors also swing outwards and upwards into the ceiling of your garage, but they leave one third of the door protruding from the garage. This takes up less room inside and requires a smaller available space in front of the garage.

The pivot points are located two-thirds of the way down the door to assist this motion and also to increase the security of the door when it is closed.

Sectional Doors

These doors are made up of several separate horizontally hinged panels and fit to the rear surface of the front brickwork of your garage. Sectional doors are able to open with a car parked directly in front of the doors as the entire system rises vertically before moving backwards into the ceiling of your garage.

Because the sectional doors don’t require the installation of a door frame there is more available car-width space.

Roller Doors

These single curtain systems roll up into your garage ceiling. The entire system fits onto the rear surface of the front brickwork of your garage, requiring only a small amount of clear brickwork to the sides and between 450 and 205mm ceiling clearance above the underside of the lintel.

Side Hinge Doors

These traditional styled doors, manufactured in steel, GRP or timber, open outwards requiring good clearance space when opened. These doors can be automated with the use of a side hinge converter that attaches each wing to the electric operator.
